JK Rowling yesterday revealed she feared Hollywood would “butcher her baby” when she sold the Harry Potter film rights.

And she said she had to stand up to one “big studio executive” at Warner Bros who hadn’t read the books but wanted dramatic changes to characters.

Rowling, 45, sold the film rights to her first four novels for a reported £1million 11 years ago.

She said: “Although the books were already very popular in the UK, it was early days in the US.

“I had no means of backing up my opinions that US fans would not want Hagrid ‘translated’.”

When American Steve Kloves was picked to write the screenplay, she said: “I was incredibly wary before I met him. He was going to butcher my baby.”

She said a studio boss who suggested changing Harry’s character, “hadn’t read a page of the books”.
